Sapphire is a precious gemstone that can be found in many countries such as Madagascar, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Tanzania. The term "blue sapphire" refers to a wide range of stones from very light to dark blue, however, not all sapphires are blue.
Fancy sapphires come in many colors such as violet, green, yellow, orange, pink and purple. They can even be gray, black or brown!
What makes a blue sapphire rare and expensive, is its hue of its color blue.
History
In Ancient Greece and Rome, royals believed that blue sapphires protected their owners from envy and harm. During the Middle Ages, the clergy were known to wear sapphires to symbolize Heaven.
Hardness & Toughness
Sapphire falls at a 9 on the Moh's scale, so it is a very hard gemstone and perfect for daily wear.
The toughness of Sapphire is typically excellent, but stones with large fractures or inclusions or treatments, can be less durable.
Treatments
Most sapphires are "treated", or undergo a process to enhance their color or improve their clarity.
Care & Cleaning
Ultrasonic Cleaning - safe if your gemstone does not have any fractures or is cavity filled
Steam Cleaning - safe if your gemstone does not have any fractures or is cavity filled
Warm, Soapy Water - safe, but avoid strong detergents or scrubbing on Sapphire gemstone
