About Garnet

Garnet, commonly known for it's beautiful red hues, is a symbol of love and ever-lasting friendship and also the birthstone of those lucky ones born in January! In recent years, Garnet has become a popular 2nd wedding anniversary gift.

Garnet is very diverse in color. It is usually found in a gorgeous red but can also be found in a great range of beautiful colors like orange, yellow, purple and green.

Meaning + History

The birthstones name, "Garnet", actually comes from the Latin word granatus, meaning "pomegranate". Garnet was very popular in ancient Egypt and much throughout history, where pharaohs wore necklaces studded with red garnets. Garnet can be found all over the world, but today, most of the Garnet is grown and found in Africa.

Care + Cleaning

Garnets typically range between a 6.5-7.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, meaning this gemstone can be more susceptible to damage compared to Rubies, Sapphires and Diamonds. This hardness rating may makes Garnet a poor choice for an engagement ring, since it will hold up poorly against daily wear and tear. Garnet is typically ideal for earrings or pendants.

Most garnet gemstones are not treated. To clean your Garnet gemstone, you can use a soft brush and warm soapy water. Ultrasonic cleaners are usually safe is your garnet does not have any fractures or if it has not been fracture filled. For Garnet, steam cleaning is not recommended.
