All About June Birthstones: Pearl, Moonstone & Alexandrite

If you were born in June, you have THREE beautiful birthstones! Pearl, Moonstone and Alexandrite are all officially the birthstones of the month of June. This allows June babies to choose from a wide variety of colors and prices!
Fun fact: Only two other months have three birthstones, which are August and December!
Pearls are organic gems - a gemstone produced by a living organism, unlike other gemstones that are made of minerals. They grow inside the tissue of a living or freshwater Oyster or Mussel similar to the ones shown below.
Pearls come in many shades of white and purple and symbolize purity, humility and innocence.
Pearls are a 2.5 to 3.0 on the Moh's Scale of Hardness.
This means they are considered a very soft gemstone and also requires extra care. Typically, gemstones of this hardness are not recommended for daily wear, as they are prone to breaking and chipping.
Storing them separately from other jewelry is highly recommend. Since Pearls are soft, they are easily scratched by other materials and gemstones that may have a higher rating on the Moh's Scale of Hardness.
Using a plastic bag to store your pearls is never recommend since plastic contains chemicals that may harm your Pearl.

Moonstones have a hardness of a 6-6.5 on the Moh's Scale of Hardness. Jewelry made with Moonstone gemstones require extra care and maintenance. High heat and sudden temperature changes can cause breaks in your Moonstone.

Cleaning your Moonstone with warm, soapy water is the only cleaning type recommended.

Discovered in Russia in the early 1800s, Alexandrite is named after Tsar Alexander II. This rare and unique and gemstone is prized for its chameleon‐like qualities and stunning colors, which appear to change in response to the light.

Alexandrite has a Moh's Hardness of 8-8.5, making this gemstone great for everyday daily wear. Alexandrite has a wide color range from greenish blue in sunlight/daylight, to reddish purple in artificial light. The more noticeable the change in color, the more valuable the gemstone is.

For cleaning, we recommend using warm soapy water and dry with a soft, lint‐free cloth. You may use a steam or ultrasonic cleaner if your stone doesn't have any great fractures. Always store your alexandrite jewelry separately, as it could scratch or chip other jewelry with a low hardness rating.

Now that you have information about all three gemstones, have you decided on your favorite one? Check out all of our gemstone jewelry here. We will be adding more gemstones very soon!
